Tom grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma and graduated from Muskogee High School in 1996.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Oklahoma and a Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma College of Law where he was a member of the Oklahoma Law Review and served as Indexing Editor.

He began his legal career in Oklahoma City focusing on civil litigation.  He gained immeasurable experience in civil litigation at Wiggins, Sewell Ogletree.  He focused on defending physicians in medical malpractice cases and second chaired a medical malpractice trial a few years into practice, which resulted in a defense verdict.

He then took his Oklahoma City experience back to Muskogee and joined Wright, Stout & Wilburn.  His practice focused on civil litigation, bankruptcy (chapters 7, 11, and 13 representing debtors and creditors), and personal injury.  In 2009, he was recruited to join the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.  He served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 2010 to 2015.  His practice focused on defending medical malpractice cases.  He also handled criminal matters, including two white collar bank fraud cases that went to jury trial.

He rejoined Wright, Stout & Wilburn in 2015 and focused his practice on civil litigation and criminal defense in Federal Court.  He joined the CJA Panel in the Eastern and Northern Districts of Oklahoma.  He was selected to be the CJA Panel Attorney District Representative for the Eastern District of Oklahoma and became a member of the CJA Panel Committee.  He continues to serve as the Panel Representative and on the CJA Panel Committee.  He was also selected to be the Tenth Circuit Member of the Defender Services Advisory Group (DSAG).  DSAG provides advice from federal defenders and Criminal Justice Act panel attorneys to the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts and the Judicial Conference Committee on Defender Services regarding policies that affect the delivery of services under the Criminal Justice Act.

When the United States Supreme Court issued its opinion in McGirt v. Oklahoma, Tom closed his civil practice and now focuses on representing defendants in federal court in all three federal districts in Oklahoma.  In April 2025, Tom opened The Wright Law Firm in Oklahoma City where he continues to fight for the rights of accused people.  His background in various types of civil and criminal litigation uniquely qualifies him as a trial lawyer.  He has tried civil cases as the plaintiff and the defendant and criminal cases as the plaintiff and the defendant in federal court.

Tom lives in Oklahoma City with his wife Rebecka, three dogs and a cat.  He enjoys running, yard work, and playing bass with his band.
